The Gallery, Cowcross Street, London EC1
The
study day is for all those interested in the future of British mural art from
the post-1945 era, when murals in a vast range of materials—tiles, mosaic,
concrete, fibreglass and many more—were
produced for a wide variety of locations. This was a true revival in the
art of mural making. Many of theseattractive but often little-known and
vulnerable artworks are now threatened, and are rarely helped by the listed
buildings legislation. Our comprehensive panel of speakers will show us
wonderful examples of postwar mural art and discuss how best these works
may be conserved. The study day will run from around 9.45am-4.30pm, and
the £47
cost will include a buffet lunch. The Gallery is opposite Farringdon Station.
Speakers include:
- Alan Powers (Reader in Architecture and Cultural History, University of Greenwich)
- Roger Bowdler (Head of Designation, Heritage Protection, English Heritage)
- Frances Spalding (Reader in Twentieth Century British Art, University of Newcastle)
- Ivor Kamlish (graphic designer, formerly with Carters of Poole)
- Lynn Pearson (architectural historian, author, TACS Tile Gazetteer)
- Oliver Budd (mosaic artist, Budd Mosaics
- Ian Leith (Deputy Chairman, Public Monuments and Sculpture Association)
There will also be a contribution from the Twentieth Century Society, and the day concludes with an open discussion
