Secrets of the Cosmati Pavement Talk

26 November 2009 at 11:30 am Westminster Abbey

The Cosmati pavement at the High Altar of Westminster Abbey is an intricate mosaic floor made of marble, stone, glass and metal which was created in 1268 as the glittering centrepiece of the Abbey during its re-building by Henry III. It is the best surviving example outside Italy of a type of mosaic stonework known as ‘Cosmati’. It is considered to be second to none in its detail, intricacy and complexity and widely regarded as one of Britain’s greatest medieval art treasures But since the 1870s the pavement has largely hidden from public view. A two-year conservation programme began last year to protect its fragile surface. Back by popular demand, Abbey conservators will hold monthly talks at the Cosmati pavement to explain the history and significance of the pavement and the conservation work that is being undertaken to restore it. All talks are 20-minutes long with 10-minutes for questions. Normal Abbey admission applies. www.westminster-abbey.org

Register your support for the Minton Archive

Message from the Art Fund Site:-

"A forgotten national treasure, the Minton Archive is one of the greatest industrial archives in Britain. A vast collection of papers and drawings, the archive documents two centuries (1793-1968) of innovative design, manufacture and production by the pottery company, Minton. Minton was merged with Royal Doulton in 1968. Royal Doulton was acquired by Waterford Wedgwood UK PLC in 2005.

The Minton Archive contains exquisite drawings by artists such as Augustus Pugin, Christopher Dresser and Louis Solon, original pattern books, business ledgers and other paperwork relating to the firm and similar records from Royal Doulton and other smaller potteries. The archive has great artistic, heritage and social value to the nation.

Waterford Wedgwood, the owners of the Minton Archive, went into administration on 5th January. Much of Waterford Wedgwood, including the Minton Archive, has since been bought by KPS Capital Partners, a New York based private equity firm. The archive’s future is unclear. The Art Fund, the UK’s leading independent art charity which exists to make sure that everyone has the chance to enjoy great art, believes that the archive should remain intact and in the public domain. We are in ongoing discussions with the new owners and are making the case for this significant archive to be secured for public interest and enjoyment."

National Trust Working Holidays 2009

Following the success of The National Trust’s Working Holidays at Cliveden last year, there are two more holidays available this year.

Volunteers sorting tiles - Copyright National TrustHelp the Trust to ‘continue solving a giant jigsaw puzzle!’ Last year's holiday volunteers sorted 2,000 Minton Floor tiles, and another 2,000 remain in a large stack at Cliveden. The Trust would like to re-use the flooring in future, but don't know what the whole design looked like. The tiles haven't been looked at for 100 years. Each tile needs to be dusted, numbered, condition-checked, photographed and properly packed before being moved into better storage.

You'll need to be physically fit and have a deft hand to cope with this challenge. Our project conservator will work with the group to provide support and training for this delicate task.

The holidays are 11/07/09 -18/07/09 and 25/07/09-01/08/09.
Accommodation is basic, from £65. Volunteers are accommodated in base camps, in single sex simple hostel type communal accommodation. Domestic tasks are shared between the group.

For further information enquire online at working.holidays@nationaltrust.org.uk,
book on the secure website at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/workingholidays
or phone the booking line 0844 800 3099.
